Hello 2018!

Lifestyle

IMG_7747

The end of 2017 was celebrated with my best friend, large amounts of champagne and rounded off with a huge portion of chips. I couldn’t have asked for a more perfect end to what has been an emotionally draining, yet emotionally rewarding, year. 2017 saw tears…LOTS of tears, both happy and sad. It also saw a whole lot of laughter and joy that I can only put down to the lovely people I have in my life. I’ve learned a lot about myself and how I handle certain situations and I have to say, I think I’ve kicked ass this year!!

There are many things I wish I had done, or hadn’t done. But each tiny moment pieced together to make the whirlwind of crazy that was my 2017.

It’s been a pretty hard year emotionally for me.

I’ve had my heart broken; I’ve had to learn to pick up the pieces and glue them back together. I’ve struggled severely with home sickness. I’ve doubted myself when I should have believed in myself. I’ve started new things and failed (I mean, just look at my Blogmas attempt!!). I’ve worked hard and received no reward. My kindness has been taken for weakness. I’ve felt insecure. I’ve taken risks that haven’t paid off.  I’ve struggled in discovering who I am and what path I should take. I’ve had to make ‘adult’ decisions that I’m definitely not ready to have made.

But, I’ve also lived. I’ve made so many memories that will stay with me for a very long time. I’ve travelled with my friends. I’ve revisited a dream role of mine. I’ve sang my heart out to hundreds of people. I’ve watched my friends grow and achieve things that make me so proud to call them friends. I’ve pretty much watched every single series on Netflix (yes, I am classing that as an achievement). I’ve dabbled in this thing called ‘adulting’, but the jury is still out on that one. I’ve put time into improving my blog and have been rewarded by a growing following. I’ve learnt the value of having true and honest friends that will always have your back no matter what. I’ve met some of my absolute, honest-to-God idols. I’ve thrived in environments that (excuse my language) scared the living shit out of me at first glance…and second.

My New Year’s Resolution is to keep growing. Not in the physical sense (that ship has most definitely sailed) but emotionally and mentally. I want to be challenged, I want to challenge. I want to fail just so I can get back up and try again. I want to laugh so hard my sides feel like they’re splitting apart and my heart feels like it might escape my chest. I want to achieve things I never thought possible. I want to be surrounded by so much love and positivity that I won’t remember the last time I cried.

I want 2018 to be my year.

Lots of love,

G X

BLOGMAS DAY 2: What’s On My Christmas List 2017

beauty, Lifestyle

This year, I struggled to think about things I really wanted to ask for for Christmas. However, that mindset quickly shifted once I started scouring Urban / Topshop and Beauty Bay (shock). Also, my parents are going to New York in December so the option of Sephora has made a massive impact to what I’ve ended up asking for. I’m going to share with you a few of the things that have caught my eye…

Just Peachy Velvet Matte Eyeshadow Palette – Too Faced

Screen Shot 2017-12-01 at 23.20.56Screen Shot 2017-12-01 at 23.21.11

Originally, I had my eye on the ABH Prism palette but then I reconsidered as Too Faced is a lot harder to get in the UK than Anastasia. Also, I’ve never tried TF shadows before and I’ve heard amaaaazing things so this palette is definitely something I’m very excited about. It’s part of the Peaches and Cream collection and the colours are just to die for. If I could design a colour scheme for an eyeshadow palette, it would be exactly this. I pretty much only wear oranges and pinky-reds on my eyes so if I was lucky enough to receive this, it would be very loved.

White Classic Leather Reeboks – Reebok

Screen Shot 2017-12-01 at 23.22.09

If you know me, you’ll know I’m a trainer-obsessor. I honestly just think you can never have enough trainers. I wear them constantly, in the day / to rehearsals / on a night out so I like having a choice of styles and colours that I can match with different outfits. Currently, the only white trainers I have are my converse and, whilst I love them, I want something that looks a little bit more ‘trainer-y’ (definitely just made up a word there). That’s when I came across these Reeboks. I have two other pairs of Reeboks and they are honestly the comfiest trainers that I own so I thought these white leather ones would be a cute little addition to my collection.

The Sun and Her Flowers – Rupi Kaur

Again, if you know me, you’ll know I love poetry – in particular, Rupi Kaur’s Milk and Honey. There is something about the way Kaur writes that is so captivating and inspiring. She has recently released her second poetry book, ‘The Sun and Her Flowers’ and I would love to read it. If I don’t receive this for Christmas, I’ll most definitely be making a little purchase myself.

Green Corduroy Pinafore – Urban Outfitters

Honestly, I think this is quite possibly one of the cutest clothing items I’ve ever seen. I love wearing little pinafore dresses, with ankle boots and tights and I absolutely loooove this one from Urban. Firstly, I love the colour as green tends to go quite nicely with my colouring. Aside from this, I’m a bloody sucker for anything corduroy – I can’t even explain it, I just think it’s so cute!! Obviously, being from Urban Outfitters, this dress is on the rather spenny side, so what better than to whack it on the old Christmas list?

Give Me Some Nude Lip – Sephora

Screen Shot 2017-12-02 at 09.39.09Screen Shot 2017-12-02 at 09.39.20

This year, the Sephora holiday gift sets have been insaaaaane, in my opinion. I think it’s such a good idea to group a few cult items together and sell them at a discounted ‘gift set’ price. One in particular that caught my eye is the ‘Give Me Some Nude Lip’ which essentially does give you a variety of nude lipsticks from different brands. If you’ve read my blog posts before, you’ll know I’m a massive nude-lip wearer and rarely stray from this comfort zone. So, I would be super excited trying brands, such as ‘Buxom’, that I haven’t before. It’s definitely true that a girl can never have too many nude lipsticks…

So those are a few of the things that are on my Christmas list this year! I hope you like my picks. What have you asked for?

Lots of love,

A Little Announcement…

Lifestyle

Hello to all my lovely readers,

As you know, recently my posts have been pretty much non-existent. I used to be in the routine of uploading at least once a week but since returning to uni this semester, I’ve really struggled to balance blogging with my workload. I’ve just finished directing a show which took a looooot out of me but was super rewarding at the same time.

All that being said, I want to get back to blogging frequently so I have a little announcement to make…

I’M DOING BLOGMAS!!!!!!

I will be posting festive-themed posts EVERY SINGLE DAY throughout all of December. This is going to be such a huge challenge for me, both time and content-wise as I never want to put anything up on my blog that I’m not 100% happy with. However, I’m going to try my very best to make this happen and I’m SUPER freaking excited to do it.

I really, really hope you guys enjoy reading!!

October Faves

beauty, Faves, Lifestyle

What I Wore: Cropped Yellow Jumper with Bell Sleeves

I purchased this little Autumnal number from Topshop at the very end of September and it’s become a staple in my ‘it’s suddenly really cold now’ wardrobe. This jumper cost £29 (sans student discount) which I think is relatively reasonable for Topshop prices. It’s super soft and is made really well so you definitely get what you pay for. I’ve never owned any clothes this colour before but when I saw this jumper on the model I knew I had to try it on. I feel like it goes really well with an all-black outfit as it adds a pop of colour. I’ll deffo be taking another trip to Topshop soon to purchase some more Winter jumpers.

What I Watched: Confession Tapes

Confession Tapes was definitely my Netflix addiction during October. If you’ve read any of my Monthly Faves before, you’ll know I’m a big fan of crime dramas and documentaries so when I saw ‘Confession Tapes’ come onto Netflix, I was super excited. Essentially, each episode focuses on a different case in which a suspect is forced into making a confession for a crime they may not have committed. The show documents the history of the crime, followed by the police’s process to convicting a suspect. It’s so interesting – each episode had my friend Lucy and I hooked. If anything, I wanted the series to be longer as there were only 8 episodes but I’m hoping Netflix bring out some more in the near future. I’d definitely recommend this if you haven’t seen it!!

What I Listened To: Lewis Capaldi / Havana / 21 Chump Street

Lewis Capaldi honestly has one of my favourite voices ever. I love his songs and have them on constant repeat. He’s only released 4 songs so far so I’m hoping for an album soon. If I had to pick my actual song of the month though, it would have to be Havana by Camila Cabello.

MT-wise, I’ve been obsessing over 21 Chump Street, a mini-musical written by Lin Manuel Miranda. If you read my September Faves, you’ll know that last month I was loving Hamilton (and still am) but then I discovered 21 Chump Street. The music is trademark Lin, which is why I love it. My fave song has to be, “What The Heck I Gotta Do”.

What I Used: Nivea Express Hydration Primer

IMG_6650IMG_6652

The change of the seasons sadly means the reoccurrence of my dry skin, especially on my face. This month I’ve been using the Nivea Express Hydration Primer which I picked up from Superdrug for only £2.39 (like, what!??!!!). The name honestly does not lie – this primer is the most hydrating I’ve ever tried. It’s a very thin, wet consistency and applies a clear sheen to the face. It helps my foundation sit nicely, avoiding the cling to any dry patches (which nobody wants). I’d 100000% recommend this product for anyone who has normal to dry skin.

I hope you’ve had an amazing October!! I’m super excited for November because it means I can start counting down to Christmas and no-one can be frustrated by it hahaha. I just quickly want to apologise for the inconsistency in blog posts; moving back to university has been so much busier and more stressful than I thought it would be so unfortunately my little blog had to take a back-seat for a couple of weeks. However, I’ve got some super exciting posts planned so hopefully you will enjoy those!!

Tips For Dealing With Homesickness

Lifestyle

It’s a known fact that I’m a pretty homesick gal. As much as I love university and feel comfortable here, I miss my family and home so much when I’m away. I knew this would be something that I was going to struggle with before I even moved to uni as I’m really close to my family so it was always going to be difficult moving so far away. Honestly, I don’t think there is anything that can make you feel 100% better when you’re feeling down and homesick but here are a few of the things I do to make myself a little happier when I’m missing the fam…

1. FaceTime them

This one is pretty obvious and is as good as it gets when you want to see your family and friends. I usually feel slightly better after physically seeing my parents or brothers on my little laptop screen so this is definitely something I would recommend doing.

2. Become ‘busy’

Luckily, I’m always super busy when I’m at uni. Alongside my course, I have extra rehearsals, insane amounts of work and I’m on the Musical Theatre Society committee which also takes up a lot of my spare time. This means I’m rarely just sat in my house feeling sad or lonely. So, if you’re feeling like this I would definitely recommend going out with your friends, joining a society or taking on an extra responsibility which will subconsciously take your mind off feeling homesick. It definitely works for me.

3. Plan your next visit home

I’ll always plan the next time I’m going home a few weeks in advance (by booking train tickets etc) so I have something to look forward to. I find it makes it easier whenever I’m having a super homesick day as I can tell myself that it won’t be long until I’ll be home next.

What are your tips for when you’re feeling homesick?? I’d love some advice as I tend to just struggle through and cry to sad music sometimes (hahahaha).

What I Wore: Oversized MOTO Blue Denim Jacket

Although this is quite a basic piece, it has recently become a staple in my wardrobe. This jacket retails at £45 in Topshop but I managed to snag it for £22 in the sale (a moment I am still very proud of!!). The reason I’ve been loving this jacket so much is that it literally goes with ANY outfit. Going out for a meal? Pair it with a skirt and cute t-shirt. Having a chill day? Wear it with joggers and trainers (as pictured). I just love the look it gives an outfit and I’m currently looking into purchasing the same jacket but in black. Looooove this.

What I Watched: How To Get Away With Murder

I realise I’m super late on the bandwagon with loving this show but it’s been on my Netflix list for ages and I’ve finally had the chance to start watching it…and I am completely obsessed. If you know me you’ll know I love anything crime-related, be that documentaries or films so I find the criminal law aspect of the show fascinating. I’ve wanted to find a series for so long that grips me in the way that Pretty Little Liars did (well the first 5 seasons, the rest were questionable!!) and I have finally found that. I would 100% recommend this show to anyone looking for something new to watch that is gripping and leaves you clicking the ‘skip to next episode’ WAY before the 10 second time limit is up (lol this is me). If that isn’t reason enough, the show also features Viola Davis who is a freaking QUEEN.

What I Read: One Of Us Is Lying by Karen M McManus

As with TV shows, I’d hit a bit of a lull with reading. I had been unable to find any books that piqued my interest…until I read this one. One Of Us Is Lying is the debut novel by Karen M McManus. It centres around four students: Addison, Nate, Cooper and Bronwyn. The book begins in detention where all four of these students have ended up coincidentally..including a fifth student named Simon. Simon is the writer of an ‘anonymous’ blog that leaks students’ secrets that are circulating through their high school. During detention, Simon dies suddenly, leaving Addison, Nate, Cooper and Bronwyn prime suspects to what is classified as a murder.

I thought this book would be pretty average but I ended up finishing it on the train journey home the same day it was purchased. It really was a page-turner and was something a little different to what I usually read. I will definitely be purchasing Karen M McManus’ next novel.

What I Listened To: Julia Michaels / Taylor Swift

Album-wise, I’ve been listening to Julia Michaels’ Nervous System. I’ve always loved the singles she has released so thought I’d give her album a nosey. It’s your typical girly album with empowering lyrics that are impossible not to sing along to. My fave songs would have to be Just Do It and Pink.

I have also been listening to Taylor Swift’s new song, Look What You Made Me Do. My friend Katie and I absolutely loooove Taylor Swift so I was really excited for the release of her new song. Whilst I didn’t initially LOVE it, it has definitely grown on me and I cannot waaaaait for the album in November.

What I Used: Makeup Geek Eyeshadows

IMG_5394

In the month of August, I FINALLY purchased my own Z Palette and have started filling it with Makeup Geek eyeshadows. I’m completely obsessed with the formula and the way the shadows blend together…definitely some of my favourite shadows. Some of the shades I’ve been reaching for the most have to be Chickadee (warm yellow), Mango Tango (orangey-red) and Morocco (deeper orangey-red). These shadows retail at £4.95 per pan on Beauty Bay so I will warn you that although it may seem like you’re not spending much…the total soon adds up (as my bank account sadly found out!!). I can’t wait to complete my little Z Palette and move onto the next one.

What I Did:

I know I say this every month, but August has honestly been pretty mad: I finished my summer job (yay!!), took one of my besties – Allie – to see The Book Of Mormon in London for her birthday and then watched Half A Sixpence with my Mom. I then celebrated my 19th birthday and performed in my final show with my MT company back at home (veeeeery emotional) and I had the best time. Moreover, it is fiiiiiiiinally time for my family holiday to Portugal, which is why this blog post is actually going up a little early. So, I’m super excited for that!!! Although August has been amazing, I am really looking forward to September as I LOVE AUTUMN and I get to see all my little uni friends again…SO FREAKING EXCITED!!!!

I hope you’ve had a lovely August!!

ABH Subculture: First Impressions

beauty

IMG_5754.jpg

If you’ve read my 19th birthday post, you’ll know I received the extremely controversial ‘Subculture’ palette from Anastasia Beverly Hills. I was super excited to try this out and to see whether all the negative things I’d been hearing about this product were true.

Appearance-wise, the palette is gorgeous. I love the blue and mustard yellow combination on the packaging and was really intrigued by the colour combination of the shadows. The Modern Renaissance was definitely a more ‘typical’ palette for me, the shades being slightly safer as I’m used to using more warm-toned shadows. But, I loved the Autumn vibes Subculture was giving and wanted to branch out and start creating different makeup looks.

IMG_5566IMG_5561

The first thing I did when I opened the palette was swatch the shadows. Of course, being ABH, they were EXTREMELY pigmented and all of the swatches seen pictured are only one swipe-worth of product. I’ve heard others labelling them ‘chalky’ which, I have to admit, I did find but only in certain shadows (mainly the darker ones but also Roxy). However, I wasn’t too surprised or appalled at this as I found exactly the same with my Modern Renaissance palette.

IMG_5568

When applying the shadows, I did find them harder to blend and work with than the Modern Renaissance and other products (such as my Makeup Geek eyeshadows), but they are not the worst things I’ve ever used on my eyes. The colour pay off is amazing, due to the pigmentation and I especially like shades such as Roxy, All Star and New Wave. I’ve found it possible to still create my go-to ‘burnt orange smoky eye’ look, which I tend to do as a quick, day-to-day situation on my eyes, whilst I am also able to create some brand new, pretty cool looks. I’ve been loving using the green shades particularly and am planning on uploading a khaki-inspired smoky eye look very soon!!

The one thing I am a little disappointed with about this palette is the shimmer shades. In my MR, the shimmers were some of my favourite shades in the entire palette so I was super excited when I saw the colours that Subculture contained. Cube is a gorgeous white shimmer with a pink reflect whilst Electric is a greeny-gold shimmer (which I was most excited about). Whilst Adorn – a deep gold shimmer – had decent colour pay off (only when applied with my finger), the other two were practically invisible on the eye. I’ve tried applying them dry, wet, with different brushes and my finger and each time the result is just as poor. Because of this, I tend to use the mattes from this palette then dip into my Z palette for a more pigmented shimmer shadow.

Overall, I’d rate this palette a solid 7/10. I love ABH and will continue to buy their eyeshadow palettes in the future. Whilst I’m not LIVING for this palette, I do still like it but it hasn’t topped my MR.

What are your thoughts on the Subculture palette?

The Sunshine Blogger Award

Awards, Lifestyle

sunshine-blogger-award.jpgHi friends!

The lovely Stephanie Grace has nominated me for The Sunshine Blogger Award, which I am super super grateful for. Thank you so much!!

The rules of the award are as follows:

  •  Thank the blogger who nominated you.
  • Answer the 11 questions asked.
  • Nominate 11 other bloggers and ask 11 new questions for them.
  • Finally list the rules and include the Sunshine Blogger Award Logo somewhere in the post.

Stephanie’s Questions:

In terms of style, makeup and design what are your favourite aesthetics and trends you love to follow?

When it comes to style and makeup particularly, I tend not to place myself into one ‘bracket’. I like following trends and discovering what is ‘in’ and ‘out’ with each season. I guess this means I don’t really have a ‘style’ but if I had to describe a typical outfit of mine, it would be something pretty similar to this:

  • A striped, oversized t-shirt or baggy cropped sweatshirt tucked into a mini-skirt (some form of coloured-denim) and an oversized denim jacket. Footwear is pretty much always trainers.

Tell me one thing you’d love to tick off your bucket list?

Number one on my bucket list is to perform on a West End stage.

Do you have any interesting family traditions?

My family don’t really have many traditions, the only one that springs to mind I think is pretty standard: on our birthdays we get to choose all 3 meals that we are eating…because maaaaan we like to eat.

Favourite song at the moment?

Hmmm…I’d have to say either ‘The Moments I’m Missing’ by Nina Nesbitt or ‘Lost On You’ by Lewis Capaldi.

What is your comfort food of choice?

Jaffa Cakes. Always.

What is the worst film you’ve ever watched?

I actually tend to enjoy most films and haven’t seen a bad one in a while. But I don’t really like any super old films that are in black and white.

Do you ever wear lashes? If not tell me why? If you do what are your favourite pair?

Yesssssss. I am such a lash lover. My favourite pair have to be my ‘Flutter’ lashes from Unicorn Lashes. You can read my review of them here.

If you could re-design your bedroom what would be your colour scheme?

I’ve actually recently had my bedroom redecorated; I went with a grey, black and white theme which I love!!
Favourite brand of makeup and why?

I feel like this requires a drug-store and a high-end answer. For drug-store, I would probably have to say Makeup Revolution as their highlighters CHANGE LIVES. High-end wise I’m going to say ABH as I am yet to try a product that I do not like.
How did you meet your very best friend?

I’m fortunate enough to have a few different groups of extremely close friends. I have my friends from high school (who I obviously met at high school), my university friends (again, met at university) and my friends I’ve met through musical theatre (who, to be honest, have become more like family). Honestly, I’m so lucky to have so many amazing, supportive people in my life.
Tell me something else about you! (can be absolutely anything)

My favourite place in the world is New York City. If I’m not living there by the time I’m 30, something has gone seriously wrong…

I’m going to nominate the last 11 bloggers that commented on my posts. So they are:

And my 11 questions to you beauties are:

1- What would be your ideal 3 course meal?

2- Favourite drug-store product?

3- Favourite high-end product?

4- Top skincare brand?

5- Most over-hyped product you’ve bought?

6- Describe a typical outfit of yours.

7- Top 3 shows on Netflix?

8- Why did you start blogging?

9- The blog post you are most proud of.

10- Your party trick?

11- Favourite makeup brush?

So there we go. I hope you enjoy answering these questions – I can’t wait to read your responses!!
